Clapping in Islam

Assalamo Alaikum Mufti Saheb,Is clapping, permissible in Islam?Jazakallah for your time.

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
الجواب و بالله التوفيق
وعليكم السلام و رحمة الله و بركاته

Islam being the perfect and complete religion has taught it’s followers how to react in every type of occasssion. For instance, When a person is afflicted with a calamity or hears sad news, he should recite Ina lillahi wa Ina ilahi Rajioon.
When blessed with good news one should say Masha Allah.
Clapping to express appreciation or approval is not permissible in Islam and is not the way of muslims. It is the way of the disbelievers as Allah Ta’ala mentions in the Holy Quran:

وَمَا كَانَ صَلاتُهُمْ عِنْدَ الْبَيْتِ إِلا مُكَاءً وَتَصْدِيَةً

Their worship at the House of Allah Ta’ala was nothing but whistling and clapping of hands.
(Surah Al-Anfal, Verse 35)

Our beloved prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam has advised us to refrain from resembling and copying the Kuffar in actions which has become their culture and clapping has become their culture in parties, music, meetings etc.

This is a very important rule and principle in our Shariah. It is narrated in a Hadeeth recorded in Sunan Abu Dawood:
من تشبه بقوم فهو منهم

“Whoever resembles a nation is one of them.”
Muslims are a unique nation who take the ways of life, values and customs only from the Quran, teachings of Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and his companions.
As muslims we should refrain from clapping and all other actions which have become the custom and culture of other nations.

May Allah Ta’ala give us the ability to adhere to the teachings of islam and the sunnah of our noble prophet Alaihis Salam.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best
